While researching the conventions of a romance film i came across a couple informative sites which gave ideas and views into the structure of a romance and what to find in a Romance film. Most of the conventions listed are very stereotypical of romantic films which helps me to include some of these conventions in my planning and film and to change the predictable into unpredictable to make my teaser trailor stand out.
Codes and Conventions of Romantic Films
- One of the main conventions is that of the scenario of ‘boy meets girl’. This is typical and expected in this genre. most target audiences choose to view these films to see the traditional happy endings.
- Particularly aimed at a female audience, often referred to as a ‘Chick - Flick’.
- there are many well known sub-genres in Romance films. such as ‘rom-coms’
- most Romance films include other genres elements without making the film a sub-genre.
- the Romance film genre explores the idea of sexuality, status, gender and relationships.
Main elements of Romance films
- Occasionally a voiceover is used to give the film a prologue introduction into the love theme
- The Main Characters are introduced.
- ‘boy meets Girl’ scenario.
- Usually two Protaganist charcters - Man and woman.
- Hints are given throughout the film to suggest that they may be a good ‘love match’ and there will be a ‘happy ending’.
- The two charcters go their seperate ways due to an argument or disagreement.
- Fianlly they Reunite.
- Traditional ‘happily ever after’.
- Opening credits usually continue the love theme, in the style of flowers, hearts, wedding bells etc…
