TEASER POSTERS : Examples analysis....

These are some good examples of teaser posters i found online, they are good in the way that they don't give much away at all but all have a story behind them and keep the target audience wanting to know more about it.....

This poster is very difficult to work out what the film is going to be about apart from a man with a hangover backed up with the quote 'I stole a police car?!' giving the audience the idea that he had been very drunk, woken up with a hangover and cant remember anything he did the night before.
With this teaser poster all you see is the producers name at the top centre of the poster which for many people is not the first thing the public automatically look for. You also see the logo of the title 'DESPICABLE ME' in a bold red with an outline of a man cleverly put in the centre with little yellow creatures hanging, climbing and lifting the logo. Now this gives practically nothing away about the film which 'Teases' you by not giving you a story line or plot, so you just have to wait and see. This poster does give a website at the bottom though which if you are that interested in what the film is all about, this may answer some of those questions.

This is a good example teaser poster for Toy Story 3.
This is a good teaser poster because the 3 is very recognisable from the bold blue and yellow font also with the DISNEY PIXAR icon above it, most people would instantly relate that to Disney's Toy Story but it doesn't give anything else away about the film.
Its a simple black background with the quote 'No toy gets left behind' giving a clue into the plot of the film, the iconic styled 3 and the date the movie is released.

Researching this has given me a better idea as to how my teaser poster has to look and the key points i should follow when planning out my poster. I have learnt that all teaser posters are extremely simplistic and have to leave a lot to the imagination, similarly to the teaser trailer. The key features you find on teaser posters is the date or even month of release usually found at the bottom, out of the way. Another feature is that theres a main image which is either recognisable from previous film (for example the toy story three poster) or just a simple image to tell just a little bit of the story.

TEASER TRAILER : Plan.

  • What is the movie going to be about?
  • It is going to be a romance with a dramatic twist.
  • Its going to be live action.
  • Dont want to give lot away, keep the audience hooked and guessing.
  • Short series of clips put together.
  • got to be between 30-60 seconds - very quick.
  • Containe the minimum amount of footage from the film, so it just teases.
  • Release way before the film is meant to come out, so put a late date on it.
  • Pace to start of slow and want it to pick up.
  • music in background, want it to prefrably start of slow and build up speed and volume like the edited clips.
  • Voice over.
  • no speaking from action footage.
  • Boy meets girl, tragic ending, not traditional love ending.
  • Love triangle.
My plans for my film trailer is to show short sharp shots from my film idea to immediately plant questions and thoughts into the audiences head. My plan was to have a lovely romantic romance film the whole audience will fall in love with. After some time and a lot of thinking i then realised that simply on its own my plan and ideas weren't going to sell unless i included something different and with a twist. so here it is.... Its going to be a live action production about a couple innocently in love until something unusual not so innocent comes into their lives and interrupts everything. The idea behind a teaser trailer is to not give anything away or tell the story, i want to keep the audience hooked and to go home after viewing the product and still be interested in finding out what the trailer and upcoming film was about.

TEASER TRAILERS : .....

A teaser trailer is a short version of a movie trailer which is designed to pique the interest of the audience, getting them excited about an upcoming film. Teasers, as they are called, are typically released months in advance, sometimes as much as 18 months before the expected release date of the film, and they are used to build anticipation and curiosity about the films they advertise. Teaser trailers can be seen before feature films in some movie theaters, and they are also released online and shown on television.

Classically, a teaser trailer lasts between half a minute to a minute. It may include footage from the film, often in a rough stage, since the film has not been completed, or it may utilize entirely new source material. In some cases, a teaser trailer is simply an abridged version of a regular movie trailer, including the film's tagline and key footage in a condensed version which is more television-friendly.

Some companies like to make teasers which literally tease their audiences with puzzles and cryptic references. For example, a teaser trailer might flash a few key images, followed by a title card with the date. Viewers are supposed to recognize the images, and infer that the date is the projected release date. This works best for iconic films and films in a series, as viewers become familiar with specific symbols. A classic example of this type of teaser trailer would be a promotion of a Batman filmwhich flashed the famous Batman symbol on the screen, followed by a date.

Teaser trailers may also include hints and clues which viewers can follow, if they feel so inclined. It is becoming increasingly popular to include web addresses in teaser trailers, so that viewers can go look up the film online, and some movies had used these addresses as a jumping-off point to involve viewers in an alternate reality game or series of puzzles, thereby drawing them into the story of the film. Others offer viewers the opportunity to sign up on a mailing list for news about the film, including notifications when longermovie trailers are released.

TEASER TRAILERS : A good teaser trailer.

The teaser trailer as we know it is a relatively recent invention. The idea behind them is the need to quickly plant a seed of recognition in the mind of an audience. They give you a briefe insight into what the film is about and leaves the public wanting to see more. when creating my trailer i shall have to put a lot of thought into what gives teaser trailers their appeal and what i can do to replicate this style through my own ideas.

I found this on a website (http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Movie-Teaser)

Steps

  1. 1
Decide what the movie is going to be about, and what type of action you'll make. Two examples are live action and animation
  2. 2
Write a rough script, and jot down production notes: who the characters are, the setting, the theme, etc.
  3. 3
Watch videos on YouTube or something of the sort and watch home-made teaser films. Notice their style and technique (but don't copy them).
  4. 4
Cast for your characters, if they have speaking parts. Choose carefully. If there will be an actual movie following, the characters should match up with the ones to be in the movie. (Unless, of course, you have miscellaneous extras in it, too, that will not be in the movie.)
  5. 5
Get your camera or computer running and go! Don't be afraid to redo several things. Filming and writing (especially so with group effort) is very hard at times, but can be very rewarding.
  6. 6
    Leave nothing ambiguous.

Teaser trailers

A teaser trailer is a short series of film clips used to advertise an upcoming movie, game or television series. The typical conventions of a teaser trailer usually are:

* That they are usually between 30-60 seconds long

* Contain the minimum amount of footage from the film, so it just teases audiences

* Released long before the film is released

* and the pace usually is fast or starts slow and picks up

TEASER TRAILERS : Conventions of a romance film.

While researching the conventions of a romance film i came across a couple informative sites which gave ideas and views into the structure of a romance and what to find in a Romance film. Most of the conventions listed are very stereotypical of romantic films which helps me to include some of these conventions in my planning and film and to change the predictable into unpredictable to make my teaser trailor stand out.

Codes and Conventions of Romantic Films

  • One of the main conventions is that of the scenario of ‘boy meets girl’. This is typical and expected in this genre. most target audiences choose to view these films to see the traditional happy endings.
  • Particularly aimed at a female audience, often referred to as a ‘Chick - Flick’.
  • there are many well known sub-genres in Romance films. such as ‘rom-coms’
  • most Romance films include other genres elements without making the film a sub-genre.
  • the Romance film genre explores the idea of sexuality, status, gender and relationships.

Main elements of Romance films

  • Occasionally a voiceover is used to give the film a prologue introduction into the love theme
  • The Main Characters are introduced.
  • ‘boy meets Girl’ scenario.
  • Usually two Protaganist charcters - Man and woman.
  • Hints are given throughout the film to suggest that they may be a good ‘love match’ and there will be a ‘happy ending’.
  • The two charcters go their seperate ways due to an argument or disagreement.
  • Fianlly they Reunite.
  • Traditional ‘happily ever after’.
  • Opening credits usually continue the love theme, in the style of flowers, hearts, wedding bells etc…

Research and planning.

Before you can make any sort of media product you must find out who you are producing and creating it for, that's the target audience. Without this you will not be able to create anything properly or successful because you will have no aim or inspiration behind what you are creating. This is one of the key pieces of information that you must work out. I have decided after lots of thinking and planning to make a romance based film teaser trailer. There are many romance films out at the moment that are also very modern i am going to have to come up with a creative twist to make mine stand out and be different from all the rest.
My chosen target audience for this genre of film is late teens to 40's.

In terms of the planning of the teaser trailer, I have looked at a few examples on YouTube of movie trailers pacifically under the romance category, and i have also watched teaser trailers from many different genres to study the characteristics of teaser trailers such as timing, dates, diogetic sound or non diogetic sound , speaking or no speaking, camera angles and edits.

Creativity, What is it?

In a class discussions we talked about defining creativity. What does it mean to be creative?

If i was to explaine what creativity means to me i would say creativity is in everyone but maybe different peoples strengths of creativity is different in everyone. I beleive creativity is ideas and expanding them, I beleive creativity is beleif which comes from confidence beleiving you can do anything, I beleive creativity is expression and making ideas happen, speaking your mind! I beleive creativity is about being independant and being able to think for yourself, and i beleive creativity is there to inspire others aswell.

I can use all these points ive come up with above and use and work them into my project to have the creative influence in my advanced production and hopefully after this project i will have more of an understanding of creativity.

'Being creative is seeing the same thing as everyone else but thinking something different'

'One definition would include the ability to take existing object and combine them in different ways for new purposes'

'Creativity is the ability to make something out of nothing and / or whith what you are given'

Planning my A2 adavanced production.

Moving on and growing up means media studies A2!
From looking at the OCR options which give us a much larger choice of options to choose from compared to AS i have decided what option i am going for this year and am now very excited to begin and improve my skills and tecniques of using different medias and programs on the macs aswell as finalising a brilliant A2 advanced production project.
From the OCR options i have chosen:

A promotional package for a new film, to include a teaser trailer together with two of these options:

  • A film magazine front cover.
  • A poster for the film.

I will produce a teaser trailer, film magazine front cover and poster to advertise the movie. I have chosen this because i have experience from AS with producing a magazine cover, content and double page spread on 'pages' so this gives me a chance to improve on my skills from AS and experiment more with different programs on the macs and to come up with a better quality A2 product all round. I have also chosen this package because i have'nt done film before and would love to learn more about film and the skills you need to use behind it. i know people that can teach me this.

Lets get started......
